A Term Abroad at VŠE

My name is Franz Toporek and I am from Austria (Vienna). I decided to go to VSE, because I wanted to improve my knowledge of Czech and because Prague is a really nice city. My mother is from the Czech Republic and so she thought me a bit Czech when I was a small child.

My name is Franz Toporek and I am from Austria (Vienna). I decided to go to VSE, because I wanted to improve my knowledge of Czech and because Prague is a really nice city. My mother is from the Czech Republic and so she thought me a bit Czech when I was a small child. But since then I hardly spoke any Czech and so I forgot quite a lot. This has to be changed here!

I think the Buddy System at the VSE is very important, because it makes the start of your term abroad here much mores easier. My Buddy picked me up from the railway station, showed me the way to the dormitory in Jarov and helped me with all the administrative stuff. With my Buddy I also have the chance to communicate in Czech, which is, as already mentioned, quite important for me. Furthermore the Contact Club is also a good institution as it organizes many trips and activities for the foreign students.

Beside the CEMS and CESP courses I am also attending the Intermediate Czech course as well as two „real“ Czech courses (i.e. normal courses at the VSE for the Czech students). The latter are quite difficult for me, as the lecturers are speaking very fast and not very clearly.

The VSE seems to be a quite nice university, although the orientation in the building is a bit difficult during the first days. The Mensa-System is also interesting as it is completely different to that in Vienna. To my experience the staff at the university is friendly and helpful. Only the coffee at the machines could be a bit better ;-).

So if anyone is interested in an intercultural exchange please do not hesitate to contact me: franz.toporek@wu-wien.ac.at. I am really looking forward to hearing from some of you Czech students and to interesting conversations about education, sports, politics, life or whatsoever. Because I do not just want to be in the Czech Republic, but I would like to be a part of it!

Uz se na vas raduju!
